Why distro news matters
Most distribution news is routine: new releases, point updates and blog posts. A small part of it needs action from you, such as a manual step before an update, a changed default, or the end of support for the version you run. Missing that part is what causes broken updates and unpatched systems.
The goal is therefore not to read everything, but to make sure the announcements for the system you actually run reach you reliably.
Start with your own distro
The official news or announcement page of your distribution is the primary source. Arch Linux News is the classic example: it announces updates that need manual intervention, and reading it before a large update is part of running Arch. Debian News, Fedora Magazine and the Fedora Community Blog, the Ubuntu Blog, openSUSE News, the Linux Mint Blog and the NixOS announcements category serve the same role for their communities.
Derivatives often have their own channel in addition to their base: Manjaro, EndeavourOS and CachyOS for the Arch family, Pop!_OS through the System76 blog, Zorin OS and elementary OS for the Ubuntu family, and Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux for the Red Hat family.
Rolling and fixed releases
On a rolling distribution such as Arch, Gentoo, Void or openSUSE Tumbleweed, changes arrive continuously, so the news page is your early warning before an update. On a fixed-release distribution such as Debian, Ubuntu LTS, Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux, the important dates are new major releases and the end of support for the version you run. Ubuntu, for example, publishes a release every six months and an LTS release every two years, so plan upgrades around those dates.
Independent news across distros
9to5Linux, OMG! Ubuntu and It's FOSS report quickly on releases across the ecosystem, and DistroWatch Weekly gives a weekly overview of new releases and reviews. They are useful for noticing what happens outside your own distro, for example when you consider switching or set up a second machine.
Enterprise and vendor blogs
The Red Hat Blog covers RHEL and the wider enterprise ecosystem, and is a good companion if you run Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux at work. Vendor blogs are announcements first; check release notes and the distro's own pages for details that affect your systems.
How to combine them
A practical setup is the official channel of every distro you run, plus one independent news site. Read the official channel before larger updates, and keep the end-of-support date of each machine in your calendar.
If you would rather not check several pages every day, Linux Doctor sends a free daily email with the new items from the sources you choose and publishes the same list on the latest checkup page.
